What is up? Welcome to Breaking Cardboard Episode four. Got two great guests today, but before we get to them, we got to take you know, a little house thing, take care of a few people or one person at a company that pays the bill. Our great sponsor ESH experience, quality, consistent and the quickest turnaround times in the grating industry. We are proud to partner with SGC.
Check them out at www dot go SGC dot com. All right, everybody, welcome to another episode of Breaking Cardboard. I am not joined by one guest today, but two father and son, uh Griff and Little Griffs. Uh.
Sportscard Fire is their new YouTube channel where they get to open some packs to share that with the viewers. We're going to do that tonight as well. Uh. Big Griff is someone I've known double digit years through fantasy leagues where I usually finish ahead of them, and obviously Little Griff Ben.
Uh. You know it's Greg and Ben I've gotten to know in in more recent years. Uh, and now they both have gotten to know him even more since they're in the card space. So enough talking, Let's let's bring him on to the show and listen more than hey.
When I when I when I scheduled this, Believe me, I didn't know the Mets and Yankee series would be the first game of the year. Not looking you guys are Yankee fans, absolutely, although I am going to work at Ben. If there's a rule, I don't know if your dad knows about this rule, but there's a rule in in in sports fandom that up until the age around thirteen or fourteen, you can actually change your favorite team. So you live in you live in a city, You live in a city right where we have the Syracuse Matts triple A team of the why not why not just go all in and the New York Mets.
What do you think? What do you say to that? Ben? No chance? Listen if your dad Greg wants the change allegiance too, right now, right now the day to ask Newman. You may recall it the You know, the Syracuse Chiefs were once the Yankees fire Club when I was about Ben's age too. So if we actually do love the Syracuse match, we go to several games morely to take our sports cards for the prospects on the other teams and try to get him signed. We got a great one last year, right.
We got a Brady House Auto. And now we are doing Dylan Cruise too. We got last year, so he's he's big en up up in the majors now and should be a great prospect, although he hasn't shown too much yet. Yeah, I'm obviously I'm just kidding guys, although not looking good for my Mets at the moment.
Matter of fact, so not good that I don't know about. I know you guys probably did. I turned the TV off so I could really just focus on hanging out. Uh, guys, And.
Well, that's that's appreciative. You know, what did you want to do, Ben, What do you want to do for the Yankees Mets game? You wanted to bring your iPad in here? Oh yeah, I was gonna watch. Listen, if you can multi task at that age, you're you're one step ahead of us, Ben, and good on you. So, uh, listen, We're gonna have some fun.
I kind of explained to these guys on the show. I'm gonna ask. I'm gonna to ask some stuff. We're gonna open some packs at random times.
I'll kind of stop and we'll walk in eight for packs. Today. I got twenty twenty tops update. Not the greatest I admit, I admitt it.
And my other pack, which is twenty twenty four Optic Football. There's a lot of decent rookie you got your you know, Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, brock Bowers, bon Nit and that sort of thing. So uh, and then you guys got a couple of packs too. We're going to wait a little bit, but go ahead.
Well we're gonna be ripping a couple. We figured your old school Newman, so these are the new old school right here. You know, the Heritage Tops twenty five. Well, here's a joke.
Here's a joke about heritage that your dad will when you open a pack of Heritage Ben, you're seeing that design for the first time. When you're your dad age and my age, you're seeing that for the time. So uh, there's the joke. Right, we see those cards when they originally came out.
You get to see him and that design you know, today for the first time. So it's a pretty cool thing, right, I mean, it's cool. You know what. People have listened to my content.
No, I'm not a huge heritage guy. I don't hate it, but I definitely don't love it. It's one of my least favorite brands. I don't open usually a ton of it.
They've gotten better with one of the things. I'm not a set guy. That's sort of a set collector's product. Not wrong with that, just not my thing now.
But they've gotten better putting like some variation short no doubt, no doubt type of hits. So I'm actually on your show since you hate them so much. Well, I don't hate one of them. It's one of my least one of my least favorite.
But oh yeah, is that the for appearing on the show? There? It is there? It is. Question what is that? What is that that? Jackie Robbins one and a half? This is this is my Grail card? You never heard of the saying Grail card, Ben. Grail, the Holy Grail cards. You know, that's the ones that you here you go there it is.
We got that about a couple of years ago. That's really cool. What years that? No, it's uh forty eight or forty nine leave, depending on on who you talk to. It's it's it's labeled forty eight leaf, but pundits will tell you that it came out in nineteen forty.
It was really came out in nineteen forty nine. So that's my best card, I would say, in my favorite cards. But I heard you ask Ben, like what did that cost a lot of money? Right? But that thankfully my wife said, thankfully you have a business account, because if that would it came out of like our I say, person, our joint account, I probably wouldn't be married anymore. You know what we got from a break here day just yesterday we got it.
We did a h a break with one of another another local guy here and it was pulling the Bowman, the you know, the Bowman twenty five just came out and we pulled a twenty of twenty five U twenty number twenty of twenty five auto of Remember the guy's name, he's the Dodgers picture from Korea, not not Suzaki the other one. And I, yeah, you know you're talking about bang. Or something like that. Three days but anyways, you know, uh, we looked at looked at the counts for the counts.
It's a it's a number five twenty five orange autograph and it's uh, it's two hundred and eighty to four. Yeah, that's a good hit from a break. They're not bad. Yeah, kicked that one out of bed as I like to say, guys.
We love it. We love it. So let me ask you this. I'll start with with I'm gonna start with Dad here.
Greg. You know, when you were Ben's age, did you collect cards? Absolutely newman, you know, I mean, it was it was the thing I did, you know, I mean, I loved it. I used to run down to run ask my parents for ten bucks, you know, so that I could buy it. With ten bucks back when I was, you know, ten years old or eight years old, I could buy a whole box of tops, primarily tops.
And then of course, you know, growing up in the late eighties, early nineties, all the junk wax years. But I didn't know they were junk wacks back then. They were great. I mean I enjoyed, you know, the diamond kings and the upper decks and you know, and and I used to put together sets and I here's a little story now.
I kept those cards all the way. I took them everywhere, and I got pretty good at it when I was young, right, you know, in collecting and then realizing that they might there might be some worth to this. So I was buying all my friends collections for like twenty bucks. Hey, your brother have cards here.
I'll give you twenty bucks for him getting all sorts of great cards, right and putting them in sleeves and putting them in books back then, you know, you put them in the big books. And I carried them around with me until about four years before Ben was born. It's the biggest regret I never knew i'd have because I had this huge collection. But yeah, so about four years before Ben was born, I didn't know he was going to be born, right, I didn't know I was gonna have another kid.
And guy came up. I had some cards out in the garage sale. He said, hey, you got yeah, about twenty eleven, right, I had a garage sale. Guy said, hey, do you have more cards? I said, yeah, I have a whole bunch.
He gave me two thousand bucks for them, and they're probably know they were probably were twenty grand. But what was I gonna do with him? I carried them around for you know, forty forty two years, and I'm like, hey, two grand sounds pretty good. So I took the money and run. And then you know, years later, I have Ben, and so we just started why don't we start collecting Ben? Because this has been a recent thing for cards.
Right. We started in twenty December. Of twenty twenty twenty three December. And we got like the thousand cards and in like seven months.
Three thousand. I bet you we have twenty thousand. He's charting, he's charting all the numbers. He's like analytical, he's oh he has we uh, we had twenty five percent, bro collect but we can we can do better.
We gotta have a better twenty twenty five. Or imnna have to fire my dad. We like, we like to call it. We like to call it right now.
It's all investment capital. It's going into it, you know, to try to build up the the ultimate payoff at the end. But I don't know. We have been pretty obsessed with it.
Have only buddy today. I had a baseball like an hour ago, but I lost, But I had I was pitching the innings. And tell him what I did. He struck out five, struck.
Out five, and I went up two hits and one walk, well, walk in one. Why give up? You didn't give up any home runs? Right? You know what you do? Right? Let me listen. You're talking to a baseball guy. I played baseball all up until high school.
I still play softball, right, you know that? You know what you do? Like if anyone ever does hit a home run, right and they come up again the next that bat, you know what happens, right. Swim him in the back. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. I'm not saying.
I'm not saying I did that, but I'm not saying I didn't. Okay, Well, you know what, he's a south pot newman who at nine years old is throwing the ball pretty hard too. Yeah, and uh so he might be my little meal ticket. You know, if I keep on grooming.
Him in, people might buy into brakes and be pulling Ben Griffin rookie cards. That's right, like right, can't wait, can't wait? Old? Are you ten? Are you ten? Night? So maybe in ten years right, pulling Ben Griffins and whatever team draft. Shit, they're gonna cost more in that break because people are. Booms.
There it is, you heard it, you heard it here first? Quick aside, Jason Grilly, I'm sure your dad's heard of Ben who played in the Big League so predominantly for the Pirates, not just for them. When I had my cards store in the village of Liverpool, he was a Bville kid, but he would come in the store and buy cards from me, and here years later he would be on them, and I just thought that was pretty that's really cool. Who was the other one? Andy Van slike to remember Andy new Heart for New Heart. He was at now Hall from Port Byron Hall.
I played. I played high school baseball with a kid named John rat Left who got a cup of coffee with the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A's. So where'd you play? Where'd you play? High school? Liverpool? Liverpool? What year did you graduate high school? Nineteen ninety, nineteen ninety. So you might have been on I was West Gennessee and I played when I graduated eighty seven, so you know.
Yeah, no, I don't think it was close, but I don't think we uh yeah, you're older than me anything. I might have had you buy a couple of years. So I was wrong, wrong on that. But of course my West Jenny, you know West Jenny, we had the unherlded baseball team because all the good athletes played lacrosse, you know, so.
Yeah, yeah, that's tough sometimes when you're in school and you're known for one sport, the other sports kind of take it on the chin and then they don't focus on that as much. For you, Ben, when did you I know you said you're nine? What what what was it when you first knew about How did this all start for you? No? No, just starting to flat playing baseball. Right, playing it, and you're like, hey, they make I've see you're a grizzled You're a grizzled veteran. At this point, you're probably doing chew right now.
Tell him the manager where you want to bat in the lineup. Don't start, don't. Don't do that. You know, big lea big lead chew, you could do big lead.
So so John, we started, uh, you know, after he was born and everything. We started with Pokemon cards actually, because you know he's into Pokemon. We were in a Pokemon go and we collected those for a while. But as he got into baseball and organized soccer and everything his and you know, I was always watching baseball games, football, basketball, I love sports.
So and once he turned the corner at about seven years old where he went from kind of playing a couple of sports and not really watching too being all in all in and we went to a couple of Yankee games when he was his Yankee game was what I think he was five years old. He doesn't even remember it. It was one hundred and six degrees out that day and we were sitting up in the left field. It was it was tough, but they won that game.
And then we've been to a couple of games every year since and yeah, we've lost every game. Ben might be a bad he might be. A your bad luck Ben. But listen, bad luck Ben, you could be a garbage pail kid in the top the tops.
And when the garbage pail kids again, you know that the heck, let's have it now. They should have a bad luck and and and I mean as in the best possible way, they should have a bad luck Ben. Card. But you wear a Yankee cap sitting in like the new Yankee Stadium, and that's the card.
How cool your card? That would be pretty cool. We collect the garbage we collected GP GPK cards. I'm old enough though, I was collecting those as a kid when they were the originals. Back Mets.
Today it's the bad luck Mets. So you should have went to the game so we could have won today, right, we could have rescheduled this to another another Friday. You know, Hey, just got a curiosity. Did they do base Do they do baseball card GPK cards back in the day? No, I mean I don't.
I don't even have mine anymore. If I remember right, there might have been like one of the characters with a baseball cap, you know what I mean? But they have yeah, not with actual players characters that I. Love those cards, right, and we like those? What are the other ones the Can he show you a couple of cards? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah, so. These are some of the ones we typically, you know, we buy a ton of cards for participating breaks every week.
So he keeps like six. Or seven of them and they rotate in and out. But tricky. Yeah, that's cool.
I like Listen, I'm a Steelers fan, but I really like Joe Burrow even though we got a these. Are hard to get. These are the Pokemon jack. Oh yeah, look at that.
Yeah, I know a little bit about that. Not a lot, not a lot, you're I mean a rod Patch. Oh yeah, the seventh Anniversary commemorative Yeah. Yeah, like Christian Hernandez graded nine five GEMMN.
Up and coming rookie. Yeah, you know, a garbage pill kid roy Al Flush. There you go, guess who that is? I can't see there it is roy Al Flush. Who is it? Guess who it is? I can't guess.
I don't know. Bbby Bobby wood. Well, he's one of my favorite He's probably my favorite non met guy. So if I have like a favorite non met about it's not Aaron Judge.
No, Aaron Judge, but that's not a We. Got a numbered air Judge, Ye. Judge on the Orange Great Year. Patch Austin Wells.
We like Austin Wells too, you know, coming up. And through we gotta patch Junior Canonero. Yeah, and then the no Yeah. And then we got a Jim mint or better graded ten Michael.
Yeah. Those came out of those you know what I mean, stars and Stars and Jem Yeah. One more and then we'll let him get back to a show. He's actually having a show right now.
That's okay, this is the bed show right now. And then a Father's Day patch. That's a nice one. There, you go, look at that.
We like it. I like Adley. I like Adley. He's probably in my mix for like, uh, you know, maybe having on my fantasy baseball team that beat your dad's base fantasy baseball team.
Oh Man play might play into it, although it's not having a great year so far. Just just a quick note about your intro there too. Yeah, we have known each other for a lot of years, and those early years joah. I mean, it goes to show you how years just you know, kind of mellow things out.
Because I remember the trades. You know, we either you and I trying to make or i'd make with someone else and you would just bust balls like no tomorrow, and I'd give it right back to you. I mean, I think that's probably the way you have every relationship, right John, They hate you for for years, Yeah, and then then then uh, the big Teddy Bear and me. Listen, the name.
The name of my fantasy team is the Brooklyn ball Buster, So I have to live up. I have to live up to the name. Oh you do. Yeah, No, I'm not, as you know.
I just I'm not a huge trader. I don't know why. It's just I don't know. I don't right, I don't.
Have your team pretty much, stay stay put. Yeah, I'm sort of like the old school Steelers, not making trades and not acting build through the draft and whatnot. So all right, so I gotta ask you why not. Let's I'll tell you what.
We're twenty two minutes in. Let's open one of our packs each. I'll let you guys, you're my guest, so I'll let you the first rip here. All right, this is.
Heah, yeah, you're not letting your dad open it. Oh no, he's the ripper. I'll be showing. But this is ye our our YouTube channel.
This is what we do. We open cards. We open cards and comment. I gotta put my glasses.
You got this, go ahead, dead. Father son. Remember those cards? I mean, I like the seventy six this year that no one just a rookie card. These are on the base.
One of the. Best first baseman's league. Right now, Yeah, my fantasy he's not my fantasy team right now. Tell you what, he's a lot of years he's still been.
He's still doing his thing. You know, he's gonna be in the Hall of Fame and it's gonna be quiet. There's the Rookie Cup. Paul Skiings, we love those Brooks, Bald.
Brooks, good prospects. Ry Weather. She's on my franchise team in my m ob. Game and.
Only only on only on PS. You know, Ryan Mothers scoring one. George Kirby he's face pretty solid, Anthony, alright, get to the gets to the good. Ones something, Riley Green, Zack Wheel.
All right, there we go, Madden, there's a Tyler adding on the parallel, the silver parallel. Yeah, that's kind of cool. Oh holy, I gotta give you a credit. Man, You save the names better than most adults.
He does. You should have seen the break we watched last night with a guy who doesn't do a lot of baseball breaks. He was butchering every name. Terrell, Yeah, Aryl, Mike Trout on the yellow.
Oh, Mike Trout on the yellow. That's pretty good. He's probably a two three dollars card right there. Yeah, stay healthy.
I like some Trout. So far, so good. He's going to throw out. He's gonna go through something once you start ripping too.
All right, all right, so let's I'll do the the bead of the two packs first. We'll say we'll save the best for last. So twenty twenty tops update. I have some older packs, but with Ben being on the show today, I wanted to get a little more current, so I too went and bought these.
All right, well, Ben, Ben, let bet tell you who the best rookies are and twenty twenty and those cards you're opening because it's a pretty pretty slim list. Yeah, I think that was the list. He just said. The list is Kyle Lewis.
Gee, he's not good anymore. No, Jake Cronenworth just okay, Devin William. That's that might be the best one. And that's Tony Goslin.
Louise Robert, Luise Roberts. I like Louise Robert bad Well, Dustin may Key, Brian Hayes, Alec Boom. Your operas, I believe, I. Think you or Willie Castro twenty he's twenty two.
Yeah, your best, your best ones out of that. Well, that's the update to would it even have like God. Twenty Let's find out. Yeah, let's find out.
Bryan mountcast May, Sean Murk, Kwyee, Kim Christian Javier, that's good, Resting, Kenzie, Jared Wolves, Jared Karen Check, Dan Dunning, Bobby go Back. Okay, to paraphrase, I'm in trouble. Probably the best out of the group. All right, let's see what we get.
Casu Goo, I'm gonna go through these quick guys, just because, like you said, Kevin Polar, Jose God, Trace Thompson, who was actually here for a couple of years with the Syracuse Yeah. Uh, tim Ocashtro he's another local guy. Oh yeah, yeah, where let me I forget where. Auburn, Auburn, Auburn, New York.
Devin Lux getting a refreshing Cincinnati. Yeah, here's a he's not a rookie, but Hall of Famer Albert Pools. Like pool holes. Yep.
Zach wh Zach Wheeler still pitching. Former Matt Well. We do have a numbered card number Astros team card. So this card's numbered.
It's Junior Era from the Diamondbacks. It's numbered, but look looks like ninety nine. I think that's pretty good that you keep going. He'll check check the value of that.
GORDERA Tijuan Walker, Joey Votto, Joey Votto, Jason Castro, Zach Davies is the last card. Uh, junior A Guerra g U E R R A. The number is U eighty one. All right, nothing to write home about.
Ben. I have to go to work on Monday. To hey, hey, this is a good time. This is a good time because Ben Ben has to do a quick shout out right now.
Oh yeah, let's hear it. Shut up to Chad because he said he'll give me a thousand bucks, So. Pay up, Chaed. Yeah, well listen, you're probably gonna get a thousand Monopoly bucks.
No one, no one, Chad and your dad can probably vouch for that. We'll take a certa months and seven to. Chad. Uh Chad, I've known for jeeper how old am I probably almost thirty five years now, and that's nuts.
And he's my he's my set up buddy. So when we do shows, you'll find us next door to each other. I probably known Chad for maybe twenty five years as long as I've no wheels. You know.
Yeah. Yeah, so, uh so I gotta ask you, Ben come back on screen here for a second or more than a second. But uh so you guys talk about your channel like whose idea? Whose idea was it was? Was it to launch? Yeah? So you're you're not shy like for a nine year old kid, Like, if I want to you this is you know, when I was nine, you know, we just had like black and white, small little TV and stone and stone tablets. Ben, But if there would have been YouTube around when I was nine, I definitely wouldn't be do I was a very very shy kid.
People. When I tell that to him now, they're like, no, there's no way. I'm right now, I'm I was super shy. And so if this existed that around that time, I even have saw me on it, I would have been running the other way.
So when I see young folks, boys and girls such as yourself on YouTube producing content, I'm all the more impressed knowing how I would have been had I've been presented the same opera, which I wouldn't have taken. How are Let me ask you this, Ben, You don't get nervous being on screen? How is that? What do you chalk that up to? How do you? Yeah? I think it's I think Dad is pretty outgoing. And see he's kind of caught that bug too. He has up pretty good on on uh on screen.
Uh, you know, in all honesty, John, I mean, what's better than this? Right? I mean, this is my boy here. I'm living vicariously through him and reliving my childhood through our love for not only collecting baseball but football, basketball. We love sports, you know, and it's just it's just a every time, but we you know, we rip open cards and put it on screen. We want other people to see because it's an homage, you know, to the wonderful idea of collecting cards.
You know, we love it and listen, listen very well, said Greg. And what how awesome is that? Right? You said? I can't even add anything to what you said. And even years from now, when you know Ben's a young adult, and then more even as he gets older, you can always look back at those videos. Probably have a few laughs, a few a few more gray hairs maybe on on Dad's head as as I do, if I have any hair left.
Yeah, I got that's going on too. Uh but uh yeah, it's you know, that's you can't put a price tag on that kind of. Stuff, at least I actually haven't. Well, of course, enjoy it now, enjoy it.
Enjoy it now. Ben, You'll be looking back at this video too, and said, remember when I said that, look at me now. So so when you open packs like on the air, like who gets them? Like is it dance card? Is it Ben's card? We're like, is there ever like disputes of like oh, you know, but they say possession is nine tenths of the law. How does that work in the in the Griffin household? Every time? Wait, if it's in my room.
It's my car, and most of the cards are in this room. You know, we've uh, we've uh you know, we we pursue the same people. I mean, Ben knows baseball back and forward. He knows all the prospects and and everything.
So when we're opening cards and he finds a banger, you know, we all know it because he'll be like. I'll take a walk and then come back. That's your that's your react, that's your like tradition when you hit something big. You know, I did see that.
I did watch a couple of videos and I'm like, where's he going? I thought, like, is he listening to this on eBay while you're recording? Like what's what? Like he can't even wait. We have just started, uh you know, we've slowly started to actually sell some of the collection. You know, I mean because we have our PCs. You know, we collected you know, Jeters and we collect who else? You love Judge Anthony Anthony bol Bolty.
Just saying I've one hundred dollars. Those are all terrible players. Do you like anybody good? We like Peter Alonzo? Yeah, other team sucks Ononzo. Well, listen, pen Alonzo almost wasn't a men anymore.
Yeah he still is, and uh Soto's starting to get it going now. Yeah he better because he's not our fantasy team. You know, we drafted as a Yankee last year. A lot of money.
The Mets are paying a lot of money going out of Cohen's well to uh that guy. So not my money, thankfully. So they're gonna have to trade some beer if they want to have any money for one. Yeah, well, they gotta get some pitching.
I think where a picture or or a picture two away from making a series. In one of those videos on YouTube. I'm gonna say, guys, I'm just gonna walk away for a second to just pray to God for the Mets to getting a better pitching staff, because. If it works, I'm all for it.
If it works, I'm all for it. Actually, their pictures are playing well now, but I think they're they're pitching. They're pitching above their tattle. If it, if it works, you have to give me a thousand dollars.
There it is monopoly. Actually, no, no, that's the deal. I mean, got twenty dollars. If that works, make it, well, we'll see.
Well, listen, it takes the Mets if the Mets win the World Series, I gladly make it two. Thousand dollars and I'm gonna put into his bank account so. I can buy more cards. No, because you're gonna, You're gonna, You're gonna fund your gags, hobby addiction, oh, any other way around? Tell me, John, I mean this, I don't know how you've been collecting.
You know, maybe it's all your life. But it's a total obsession, isn't it. I mean, it's just it can be. I will say this.
The owner I get, I've I've managed it better, but there was a time period Libby and sleep it. You know what I mean. I've done better. The older I get, But I love it right, That's why I've done it for forty years.
You don't do I don't care what anyone says. You don't do anything for forty years. If you don't love it, you gotta won't. You won't last that long if you don't love it, so you gotta.
So now here I am. I started when I was nine years old, and here I am. I'm twenty nine. Now I've been doing it for twenty years.
You know. I'm probably well. I mean, here's the sad part. Ben, I'm closer to eighty than I am twenty.
You and me both brother, you and be both. That's that's sad to say, but it is true. So what are you gonna do? Right? Like my dad says, there's only one way to stop getting older, and I don't right the way right so so but yes. Oh, hey, here's something that we collected bibbleheads.
That's a that's a Mike Piazza bibblehead right there. There you go, there's a there's a met Hall of Famer. There's a bibblehead you don't have. No, that's me.
I'm a skinnier. Look, I'm a skinnier bibblehead. That's what I tell you. What if you want, if you want to send us a John Newman bobblehead, will put it right up.
I gotta be honest with you. This is the only one I got. And there's a story behind this. A fan of my podcast a couple of years ago.
This is about four years old. The podcast itself is six years old. So a couple of years into the podcast, a fan of mine of the shows emailed me, I'll make this story as short as I can, he emailed me, and he goes, I need a headshot, a real close up head He didn't tell me why. He goes, I need a real close up headshot of you love the show.
Need a And I'm like, this is a weird request. And I said, I can do this, but I really gotta ask, like, just because I don't know what's going on here? Why because I really he goes, I know it sounds creepy. I wanted to be a surprise. I can't tell you.
I'm not so weird though, Just you gotta trust me on this. So I'm like, all right, I took this leap, you know, leave of faith. I sent them a headshot. You go send one you you're fond of that you like youse and and in a couple of weeks you'll see why I needed it.
So I sent it to him. And then a couple of weeks later, true to his word, I got a box in the mail with a nice little letter say, hey, love your content. Wanted to do something nice for you, and he had this custom bibblehead made. So he also asked for some of the logos of the show.
So if you see my hat, that's a show I do called Hobby Quick Hits, which is just me real quick tackling like one topic, here's my ugly mug actually have better looking than the real version for sure, Like look, let me see, I can't do it. And then there's because it's definitely not this, it's definitely. Not this everything else and does your face easy? There? Way? Do you? Did you enjoy your one appearance on the show. And then you see you see I still love you, Ben, And then you see there's this one of the sports Cardination logos shirt and they even got like I even said, the picture goes, send me a picture of your favorite shoes.
So there's Nike air Maxes here and I was wearing these things big time at the time. I still they started to fall apart, so I don't have these anymore. But and then there's another logo on the base and I that was a that was a pretty cool thing. And I've gotten you know, I don't do the show guys for obviously free stuff, but I've gotten some crazy stuff.
I don't know if you can see it, it's right here. So another person the first anniversary of the show, they had a commandment of Batman with the Sports Cardination logo. I loving it as well, So so it's just it's crazy, like I don't do it for that, but when people do that stuff, it's really you know, warms, warms the heart. And validating to touching people, you know.
Yeah, and you know that's what I'll say. Even with your YouTube channel, right, you never know how you may be affecting someone or inspiring somebody or making someone's day, and so you know, and sometimes you know, those are the people who actually did something. There are others who will enjoy it and just enjoy it. You might not say anything.
You got to keep that. You got to keep that. You got to keep that in mind. We hope that you know, through our YouTube channel and our Facebook page and suit coming very soon our website to h yeah and what not to we're gonna start doing some whatnot you have claim sales, valor auctions, things like that.
But we know that we can expand our viewership and maybe touch a few hearts, you know, the bonding thing, you know, the whole Yeah. No, that's and and that's the thing Greg. For me, it was how I was got into the hobby was through my grandfather and then my dad as well. It was my grandfather and then then with my dad who And this is in Brooklyn, And I think seventy eighty percent of the origin stories of how we start a hobby is some family members us.
Whether whether it's an uncle or grandfather, mom, whoever, doesn't even matter, because no matter who it is, you'll always remember it and cherish it. And you know that's the great story and that that tradition can continue. Uh when when you have a family of your own, man, you can your son or daughter, you can you know, introduce the hobby to them and then take all their good cards. Right up there, card, I'm not gonna be up.
So you can just yeah, you can talk about So we have. A one soda week card U graded to ten. And then we also have a Victor Webbama New York first pitch out of. Ten baseball Victor Webby.
You know, we collected car NBA cards last year. And you know what, this is probably one of the things that really inspired The first break I ever participated in was a random basketball break where you got all right, well maybe it was the second one, and I'm talking about the So it was a random basketball break where you know, you paid so much money and you got you got assigned the team. Well, we happened to get the San Antonio Spurs and pulled a pink. A pink ice.
No, no, it wasn't. It wasn't numbered the pink the pink pink ice. Wemby, He's like Tony Reality from part of the interruption where he corrects Tony Corn. Right, Yeah, right, like.
Sorry, guys, when you said this, you were wrong. Right, You're wrong. It was definitely Yeah, we lebron in the first one. But we love it.
You know, we love the breaks. We love the thriller chase. That is is how about this is a couple of questions here one one for Ben here alone? Like you obviously playing Little League baseball, you have teammates, Ben, Do any of your teammates car collector or not? Actually, today when I was hitting out because I had like a reaction after I pitched, I had like a bad headache. Geo was one of my teammates.
His name is Geo was asking about my card Coluk. Yeah, we have one on our team to Ben Ben w. Oh yeah, oh yeah. He's a Josh healing Downtown Downtown and he has a which.
Is a great card. You know, Josh, you know I'm gonna I'm gonna teach him the way I forget well booms, I. Think I think both of them are like twelve hundred dollars. Yeah, but well, here's the beauty about playing in like on like team sports is you can get your teammates like collecting, and then you can wheel and deal in trade.
And and and grow the hobby. Right. What's the one thing great about the sports card community is it's that's it. It's a community that can grow even even bigger, all right, and then they watch your chant.
They can watch channel as well to tell their friends. And there you go, Ben as Uh, you know, we have one other U. Ben has one other claim to fame, and that he is the he's the model for pe brands. Well, that's right.
I knew about that. Yeah, And so you'll see you'll see sports cards and uh in little packs that are that are put together in all of the like Sono goes and other places, and uh, Ben's Ben's faces and uh every one of those little sports card kiosks and you know people, and I knew I. Knew about that. I remember that, Ben, What do you think you think we could be a duet duo on these as I get trim this a little bit, so.
You and his boys, you. Maybe just yeah, that would probably be better. We don't we don't want to. We don't want to scare people.
Give one so for your whole collection. Listen, I love that one so though, as in New York, Matt. But I'm gonna keep the I'm gonna keep collecting. How about just how about just.
For a jackie. Jackie? How about whatever baseball you have? It's all baseball. Yeah, no, I have other sports. Actually you can't see it.
It's not a it's sort of my chairs blocking it. But that's my rookie graded wall. But my big body's kind of blocking. By the way, I'll have to have you over and give you a little my small room studio.
Well, i'll tell you advice versa because this room, I mean, you can see kind of behind us. You know, we have some of the greats on the wall there. There were sketches that I collected when I was a kid, like nineteen seventy six, you know, Nolan, Ryan, Thurman, Munson and some of the others. I got a couple of Mickey Mann, a Lotto grass and my father had gotten me.
But this whole room is just an homage to sports, you know, and our collection. Yeah, except for the same picture. That's cool. So you mentioned but you know, you guys buy into breaks? Is that something maybe down the line where you'll be Do you ever want to run them yourself? We think so.
Uh. We have a we have a buddy that we did this break with last night who's local, actually works with uh, he works with wheels, he does his uh social media, Darryl. Yeah, and Darryl. Darryl is offered to have us on so that Ben can break break with him.
There you go, that will be really cool. It's all just you know, kind of the beginning developmental stages. You know, by by the time he's twelve, he's gonna be an old pro, you know. He's he'll be he'll be past this prime.
I have to retire. Right lash in the pan. All right, so let me Yeah, you're I think you're ready to open your next back is what I'm gathering. Yeah, let's do it, all right, go ahead, let it tell him.
Oh wait, no, we're not gonna it's just open because we're not gonna open all these packs. Yeah. Yeah, well that's the You open this one and I'll open my last one. And then we'll talk for a little bit and then we'll wrap it up.
All right, sounds like a plan. Man, This is this is the twenty twenty three? Is it the series one? For the series one? I don't know. Tops update, this is the top up date twenty three. Since you did the twenty, we'll show you what the real pack looks like.
You know, Rookie, Eddie Rosario, Jose Alvarado, Dylan Brewer, Hicklin. Matt Straw, Nobody, Nobody, Nobody, Brax and Garrett hey Ben. I promise my wife would be done on Friday. Casey Schmidt, Acey Schmidt.
That's the all Star, the All Star. I'm kidding with you. I'm kidding with what I said. And then and what do we say about like I like, he's on my Fantasy most Overrated, No Most Rate player every year.
Yeah. Man, you know I didn't realize, Like I knew he was good. I'm not naive, but I didn't realize how good he was until I really opened the stat book. I looked at like, holy brat, man, he's unbel like I don't.
I think a lot of people don't realize, like the kind of numbers are not yep, you know, so they had a numbers for sure. All right, so I'm gonna open this is bet well, at least potential hit wise, this is better uh than that update pick? Right, what are you gonna open for? Ben? Well, let's see what we get here. Twenty twenty four optic. There's only four cards, so there might be a quick this will be this won't take long.
I see a rated rookie right on the back us one. Do we got Let's see uh Dexter Lawrence the Giants Syracuse player there there. Franklin, zire Franklin. Yeah, all right, we got a hollow J C.
Horn from uh and another great pack uh and then uh J C. Latham apparently this was the This was the j C pack J C. Latham and J C. Horn? Right, Wow, what do you call a pack like that? But yeah, that was a bun.
That was a Bun's optic pack that that could have been. This could have been a better pack. I was I was hoping uh for something, but fun, you don't know. It's like scratching a lottery ticket.
You don't know. Sometimes it's true. That's part of the man. Yeah, so guys like this was fun, I don't know, about you.
But I had fun and it's all about me, so I don't really know. You guys have we had an absolute ball and uh, you know all we're so glad that you've you know, you've made the show what it is so far and continue to grow it. And yeah, yeah, this is this is I try to do, you know, And I try to have people on that you know, not all talking heads on the talking heads, so we don't need too many talking heads, right, So I try to have like everyday collectors, and that's what it's all about. I'm a collector and I don't want to make sound.
But after we're done, we're about to do a YouTube video. Yeah we speaking of that. Listen before we go here and wrap it up, give out that info so those listening, because this is gonna air on regular audio as a podcast. Sou for those listening, give out where they can find your your content, guys.
