turns out at the end of the day but uh you know designing the perfect set right

we hear perfect game in baseball right how about what is the

perfect set if you if you were working for you know I guess we'll use them since you know tops Fanatics and you

were tasked with they put us in charge of the new division we've just been hired to now lead the new baseball card

division yep what what would that look like what would we do either the same

add-on do differently uh to design what we would call the perfect well we'll say

baseball set but it could cross over to other sports cards uh too but we'll we'll kind of have baseball on the on

the front burner uh if you will and so uh you know we're gonna we're gonna tackle that uh I have my thoughts you

have uh your thoughts somehow they're different I don't understand how that happens uh but uh it has happened some

of us have taste yeah so I mean I'll I'll let you I did kind of the kickoff

but I'll kick it to you kind of the the lead us into into this sure well I took

I took this from the approach of if I was starting from scratch so I'm not picking like a specific set that already

exists if we're starting from scratch and designing it what what would I what

components would I want to make my perfect set and for me I think any good

set has to have a combination of some autographs in and they should be a combination of rookie autographs and

Hall of Fame autographs to me I I think both of those um just any great set has to include

those so for me I like to be able to you know whether it's prospects or you like

I said even Hall of Famers not everybody has to be a Babe Ruth cut but you know just good Hall of Famers that you know

even from our childhood you know throw in a Greg Maddox or you know even a Brooks Robinson or somebody yeah and and

that makes a fantastic insert and you don't have to have a rookie card when you get a Hall of Fame autograph so it

gives you a little bit more to chase um and I think it ties to history so I like the autographs to me right off the

bat that would have to be part of my perfect set design yeah I like that I think you have to

have you know autograph cards and you gotta have some star power behind autograph cards right you can only pull

uh you know so many uh you know Jose oquendos or

you know before like people start going on social media and said like is there

any good autographs in the set because all I see is these guys being pulled so you know they can't all be star power

but you got to have and I like your idea right you gotta have some retired players uh Legends of the game that are

in there right to chase uh and go after and you also you take care of that crowd

that's still collects those folks or wants to add those type of folks uh to

their their collection and then you know rookies right you just say rookie it's a it's a driving force behind the set

right I mean we we look at sets Powers even years later as what rookies were

that came out what were cards were in that set that year so you had the

autograph Factor it it magnifies that right hey there's a rookie Auto of

insert you know player name yep uh there so I I like that uh I I'd agree

um you know I saw uh Chris asked you know Chrome or non-chrome uh I guess

we'll we'll call this like a flagship so it's it's gonna be probably not Chrome you know well that's your set speak for

yourself yeah well you know me I said all right so I'll I'll answer that I'm a

sucker for acetate cards right so okay I know it's gonna be more money

Chris he took door three yeah I went with George three out let's let's make a

deal I have a bobby pin in my purse um so I want to go I would like to make

at least one year I'm not saying it's the flagship every year right but I'm an

acetate guys so I I how about in all acetate set again I know the cost will

be more and obviously that gets passed down uh to the consumer but I love that

he I don't know if you remember him back in the 90s or people out there listening may remember them uh Pacific of all of

all companies did uh not an all acetate card but they sort of had a a prism

holographic foil with an inset that was acetate with the I would sort of like to

do a reverse of that so the most of the cards they asked to take and how about a like regular cardstock inset that would

be uh pretty interesting I've never seen it uh necessarily done like that so

something along those lines so that that yeah go ahead I was gonna say my

grandfather had a saying if you haven't seen it before there's two reasons it's either a great idea or a terrible idea

and you just got to figure out why you haven't seen it so that's a great idea to me so right that'd be interesting I'd

like to see the reverse acetate um I'm an acetate fan just not quite as

much as you are my set um I'm I'm gonna say my set would actually not be Crum and you know I

don't know if that was my initial thought I think initially I I might have said crumb but um

I might I would have Chrome inserts in fact I'm gonna I'm gonna make that part of my set I think a good insert whether

Kaboom is not my personal but a kaboom a my house like even a Diamond Kings you

know uh something of that flavor you have to have a strong short print

um or even super short print insert Set uh I would like to see a sports artist involved something artistic and to me

that would be a key part whether or not that combines with the autographs that I was talking about before or not I think

a good set you got to have some sort of signature insert that people can go after and like I said it could be

anything from you know the Diamond King you know drawings you know back in the

okay gosh the 80s and 90s all the way up to the Kabooms and the my house and the stuff they do in basketball and football

now um and anything in between but a strong insert for me

um yeah well listen if if this is TAPS in Fanatics and we're now employed by them right they've already done all

those art projects right the project 2020 Spotlight 70 project 70.

um why not and have the artist do cards and not even make them so much

base cards where they're like just prints of the card but why not you know I know people don't like Redemption

cards right well why not put like a Redemption card for the original art of

that artist right signed by the artist that'd be that'd be like a giveaway like hit the big one and win the win the

original art Yeah well yeah but it's a Redemption card right for one of one original art piece signed by the artist

whoever that particular artist is you obviously can have multiple right it's not going to just be uh one card and

maybe you could make a chrome how about a chrome we talked about Chrome how about a chrome version of those

non-chrome art pieces right as regular card inserts not the sign yeah it is

just a regular insert Set uh you know insert sets uh you know you can have

your parallels right one thing I would do is make it easy to tell when you have

an SP or a super short print right that's a like what tops is starting to

do already right where the backs are easier to read and you know you got some you don't have to take out your bifocals

and look at the bottom for a three-digit code that you can't read um and that just you know you're taking

out your your magnifying glass to to blow up so you can read it and spend too

much time doing it right so make it easy to tell when someone's pulled something uh that would be number one I you know

Chrome inserts I like to see insert sets where you kind of have your skill set

players represented and you have your pictures kind of in their own insert

sets you know whether you want to call them hurlers or or Mound Aces or whatever I like to draw I like to draw

circles not Lines John everybody should be together yeah no I mean listen you can change it

every year we're talking about one year what we would do right I'm not going to do it I can't afford we can't afford to

do an acetate set every year but this year's Flagship will be that right what

what what would you change so I want to do I don't think we need three Series

right we don't need a series one a series two and an update how how big is

your base series let's start there well let's make let's do this let's make series one 400 cards right it's 3 30 in

in 2023's edition let's make it 400 cards right and let's make series two

come out later let's make series two come out in October November or or even

December after the September call up and series two has all those late rookies in

it series two in my work in my perfect set series two becomes update right

there is okay so you seriously you get rid of it yeah you have to wait a little bit longer for it but I know it's for

some that might be sacrilegious get rid of update you know and tops Fanatics world right I just cost them money

because they have three uh one less item on their menu to to sell uh to Consumers

but again this I'm I'm I'm Michael Rubin here I get to make this call I'm gonna

go so you know series one a late series two that and gets all those late

call-ups in there and you know like before this year's tops uh release right

Andy rushman's card is a rookie let's be real like that really should not be a

rookie in 2023 right uh it was kind of it was done listen it's their strategy

there was done in on purpose was 2019. yeah I wanted to see the rookie card

come out the same year uh they they play so if we got a release series two in

December then we got to release it or even January right whatever

um you know you would have you would have people up in arms

I would but I think there would be I think eventually more people would would

like it I think it might get some resistance at first because you know people are resistance to change people

don't like change I know update has that cachet by name right all update rookies

right but I like I like the rookie cards to be in what I would call like sort of the base

you know the flagship uh sets and so you know I mean you could do an update you

know uh but maybe you don't even call it series two you come up with maybe you just don't even call it series one you

just call it 20 20 you know 2024 tops

yeah 2024 remember remember back in the day and all the old folks like us right

you had your base set and what do you have to do you what they didn't even

have they didn't come out in packs they were fat little Factory traded sets like they're like you know you and I both

probably have 10 of them within 14 minutes I have more than that over over there so what about I'm not saying we we

bring back those those sets but instead of having them in set form we release

update in pack form so you have Flagship and then in late December or just before

Christmas strategically you have the update release right the packs right

okay uh that would be that would be how I would do it all right let's uh John

you want to read off some hellos here can you yeah we can collect uh no I I can see uh the next week I'll need my

glasses uh collector's dream hello uh nice to see you Chris Ramsey's uh in the

house Double D Dylan uh yeah nice to see you sportsmd Card Collector uh good

evening uh as well so yeah I mean and and feel free to put uh you know put uh

what you'd like to see in the chat room see if it aligns kind of what we say or even uh you know go off on your own uh

tangent what you know you you put on the CEO hat and and wave the magic one right

so uh I I don't think we need three series I know it's a money generating

for card companies too it's too complicated I'd rather see do two theories and then

do you know do a third series but not really be a third series just just

Rebrand it as you're already sold me lately on on a flagship and an update

and I think that I I love that throwback approach because then you're re I think

that actually makes the rookie thing easier because you have the flagship that comes out and then you have your

update and it's self-explanatory yeah and you'll have rookies in both you know we can we right people love rookies I

love rookies you love rookies we all love rookies right uh so you're gonna

have rookies in both obviously the update version uh will be rookie heavy

with those and that'll drive a lot of attention to that product I think series

two right series two comes out now and it's like eh what's in it right you know

what I mean so what can I throw can I throw one more thrower back at him at you sure remember when they used to do

the team cards and you had the team photo all together at some point they stopped doing that

I'm sure just because of logistics and roster moves and everything else I would love to bring back team cards I don't

care if it's 100 accurate I don't care if a guy got sent down I like having a team card

um I I would like to see the team cards brought back you can do the picture in spring training but but I I always liked

having you know I'm an Oreo fan I always liked having that Oriole team card there was just something about it uh and and

having every year and having that team card to me was always cool and it's not expensive and it's not a big insert it's

probably just a common but I want team cards back all right what about what about this what about let's put a spin

on that right what did we bring back to team cards but make them short prints

right so when you when you open that package well the Jose Altuve Jose Altuve

is is a short print we apologize to Jose's family but uh not

Jose um but now whatever you make that like listen let's be realistic right if

you're opening the pack of cards and you see that team card in today's uh era

right you're probably gonna be like I got a team card right what about if we made him short Prince so now when you

see that team card when you're kind of Fanning them out like oh you know you've

got something that's lesser produced than even the regular uh base cards how

about short printed uh Team cards and what about remember the checklist with

the with a player's face on it back going back to Vintage days you know you could bring those back what do you want

on the back of the team card do you want the of all the players that are in the set in their numbers like they used to

yeah I want the checklist and I love uh collector's dream put up here the uh the leader cards and the All-Star cards love

those ideas the the especially the Vintage leader cards would have the top three players and

you'd always end up you know inevitably with some combination of Hall of Famers years later so I I those are always cool

to even look back upon now and some of those cards carry good value uh because of the players in them so I could see

bringing those back but yeah put the checklist on the back of the team card make it a short print and uh yeah

absolutely because I remember opening packs back in the day right uh and you get that kind

of team card you're like ah I would have rather had a regular player card there right but again you make them you make

them build a little intrinsic value into it as a short print that disappointment

goes from disappointment to not being disappointed like hey I got a hard harder to get a team card right and for

for people who build right there's still a lot of Team set Builders out there right I got to get every Orioles card I

got to get every Mets card that card becomes a little bit of a Chase because it's not as easy to get as as the

regular cards right and that happened naturally uh with a lot of the Vintage because you didn't keep your own you

know you didn't keep other teams so actually said Builders know that sometimes the team cards and the checklists are the hardest ones to find

yeah no doubt bro we'll say hello to Brendan uh Amelia I hope I said that uh

uh Amelia uh you know he mentions uh manager cards what about bringing those

back I know you know not too many managers that are are very collectible

but um John John they now do the top 10 hottest

managers list every year I think you know this is not like the old days this is like in terms of what they look like

oh yeah oh yeah absolutely Mike Matheny Gabe kapler these are multi-time winners

uh depending on who's uh currently employed I don't know who who this year's uh favorite is but uh yeah no I

think I think those could be Chase cards for people yeah make those short prints right I mean no one no one probably

really wants a pool manager's card but now you sort of bake in that harder to

getness and it's not such a disappointment like when you get you know your Joe Madden card and you

realize there's not as many of those as you know face Mike trouts you're not as

as uh you know broken up about it so I mean you can go in so many different

directions right uh yeah Buck show out there you know uh I'm hot it's not the

hottest man hot stuff yeah actually I think he did it I don't

think that's a joke I think he actually he did when I think he won manager of the year or something at the baseball

yeah yeah that's true yeah so Brandon I believe

that's true uh put it in the comments uh but I believe I actually did hear that so yeah I mean yeah I you know it's so

you and some people might say well John that's what heritage is right that's the Heritage release I'm not a Heritage guy

I know that's to some that's blasphemy I I Know Rich Klein's a big uh Heritage

guy that's his baby uh I could do without it let's let's bake the Heritage

into the regular release in in different forms whether it's an insert set maybe I

was talking about yeah which they do already right I mean every 35 years right we get the the inserts

from the design from 35 years ago so this year it's 88 tops next year it's

going to be the great 89 tops uh which I I opened plenty of because there's a guy

named Greg Jeffries that appeared in that release so rumor is you that you

have an affinity for Greg Jeffries and he's actually he's actually tied up in your closet right now

um okay so it real real quick I want to wrap this up before we move on uh I like

this comment uh I never liked the 86 Topps football colors green and yellow it kept me from buying them yeah you

know we should we should put that on both of our lists it should be a good looking card I think we both agree it

should be a good whatever you whatever that means to you I think we all like better looking sets well I think I think

what you'd have to have Danny I think you have a group of designers right and you come up with 10 different designs

and you you you pick that what you feel is the best one right and if there are a few that

really are hard to pick from why not to save it and run it the next year right and uh maybe they do that we don't even

realize it um for for all we know right so you you have some designers come up with their

concept you pick three or four out of the lot that you get and you pick one

obviously this year and if the if there's three or four good ones hey there's 20 25s we already got the design

no one knows about it yet right but that's what it's going to be so um you know yeah there's a you know in

that 86 Taps as as Chris said if you pull Jerry Rice though you won't be that

sad anymore so um all right and

this is a good point here I think we'd all like to see the retail and the hobby maybe uh

be a little bit equal chances to pull things and that's yeah that's a good point

um so I think just in general um and then uh Brendan says the new tops

design the top set designs look like bad sci-fi versions of future baseball cards give me Heritage all day I love the 88

inserts in 2023 series one um so yeah I mean you know this is where

everybody has their opinions yeah Heritage is you either love it or you hate it so Brennan Brennan loves it and

I'm I don't I don't hate it that's what people say about me you know I don't hate it it's just not my thing so I

don't open it it's definitely a I I I'm preach you know I'm stating the obvious

here but Heritage is definitely a set Builders release that is and I don't do

those anymore I used to back in the day uh but right uh not anymore so I get

this purpose I I that's why I just I don't buy any but I understand people

have an affinity for I get it I get it so I I don't hate it I'll just say it's not my my cup of tea all right

um I think we're going to move on now but if you have anything you want to add into the chat let us know but we're going to move on and talk a little bit

of NBA heading down the stretch here Mr Newman anything to add on your set before we uh retire you from uh you're

the head of uh fanatics no I just I want to see that that acetate I'm not I'm you know everyone

knows I love that you you had me at uh you know the old line had me at hello you had me at uh acetate and the one

thing I'll throw in there is get rid of image variations if I if I haven't made that clear I'm not well then you don't

like this year's because every card has one I I do not like it at all I have nowhere the first time ever and seeing

Wonder Franco with a giant head or anything like that so

um you know maybe maybe that's Barry Bonds had a giant head ykwanda Franco

uh I I I I think we're getting it thank you I might not be a doctor but I said a

the All-Star break at the NBA season but then I think there's only like 20 or 30 games left in in the second half so I

don't know how that works uh it's not really mid-season uh but we've got good odds now

um it looks like on who might be available uh as far as odds to win the

NBA championship this year and let me read this for those of you listening on the audio uh we just we just listed the

kind of the top five or six uh as far as the odds here the Celtics uh on the money line uh is plus 280 bucks plus

four 430 Suns plus 480 nuggets plus 750 Clippers plus 1200 and 76ers plus

fourteen hundred so John my my question to you and and Sun's just got Katie yes

that's why their odds are much better than they were if you had a hundred dollars so it's not necessarily who you

think's gonna win but if you take in maybe the long shot odds versus the short odds if 100 bucks were you putting

it or are you dividing it up how are you handling this yeah it's a great question I like

I like uh I think I go with the Bucks I mean like you said the Celtics probably

the most balanced team and probably the most dangerous uh you know some debt

there and that's why you know they're they're the the the their overall favorite but you know you're not going

to get the most bang for your buck as you just said there uh so I kind of like the box that got arguably the greatest

player uh playing today in in Giannis I know there's other great players Luca uh

but uh you know the Bucks will give you a little bit more bang for but I I think this Milwaukee team is is not as good as

the 20 21 team that won the championship so that's the risk you take they may not

you know they may not win it I think they were better in 2021 I think you

know uh like Chris said with the with KD uh going to the Suns that that that

becomes almost more interesting for that hundred dollar bill you're gonna throw down at plus 480 on the money line so

I'm kind of would that hundred dollar bill I'm sort of between the the Bucks

and Sons I don't see the Lakers on here that's a that's a sarcastic comment

so but uh you know I I'm gonna I I you know I'm gonna walk into the casino and

until I get to that that uh you know cashier's cage uh in my mind I'm

debating between the Bucks and the Suns you know it's funny I I'm a Suns fan

because I want Chris Paul to try to get a ring um and if he stays healthy I love them adding KD KDs from my neck of the woods

over here uh in the Maryland area so the slim Reaper you know put him over there

and they've got so much talent uh Jason Tatum's got a chance to win MVP this

year so you got to respect what the Celtics are doing they seem to almost be do uh that being said Denver God is

Joker good uh you know I mean back-to-back MVPs and he's going to make an argument I mean he really is going to

make an argument for three in a row and if you go down the list of NBA players that have won three MVPs in a row so a

real short list uh you know and I'm not good enough off the top of my head to think of uh to bird won three in a row I

think um but uh I'm not I don't know it did Magic I know he's got a few but yeah but

the point is if Joker can pull it off and we're talking about just you know a dominant player so anytime he's on the

floor you know you gotta gotta give them a chance but I'm with you I I I think if I'm taking my hundred dollars at plus

480 I'm I'm gonna put at least 50 on the Suns um and then you know what I'm I change

it I'm going 75 on the sun's 25 on the Celtics I'll hedge my bet a little bit uh oh we can do that I didn't know that

I thought we just had to put a hundred bucks on one I may I I made up the role after your turn

it was too hard so I changed the rules uh the show game I'm right back in New

York City again right exactly three chord Monty is our next segment coming up on card mentions

um well let me ask you if you could divide it up would you have changed your answer I mean I know you went away yeah yeah I will change my if I can change if

I can put it on multiple teams right so I've you know what I'm probably gonna

only put 25 on Milwaukee I'm gonna put 50 on Phoenix and I'm gonna throw 25

on uh Denver uh I think Denver I think Denver's odds might be

too too long shot I think they're they are very good you know you you know you

I think they're on paper you know for the whatever that's worth they might be better you know than that Milwaukee team

I know you know a lot of that is is based on on Giannis I get it

um but uh you know uh Denver like you said with yoga again they have their own version of their Giannis right so I

think the nuggets are a great play so I go I'll go 25 and and

you know 25 on Milwaukee 50 on Phoenix and 25 on Denver and I guess what I'm

saying there is I feel like one of those three teams is definitely uh hoisting

hoist in the the O'Brien trophy I think they still call it that so yep I mean I

you know I hadn't thought about playing putting some money on the long shot for the Nuggets that's probably a good call there but I think I think we uh both

feel pretty good uh or that it's going to be one of the favorites I just at this point I don't know that the

Clippers the 76ers um are really going to match up you know

through the playoffs um real quick uh Chris says uh Mac

McClung two-day contract for the slam dunk contest for the Philadelphia 76ers is the money move for NBA never seen

this before yeah they signed him just just for the slam dunk contest so uh I

think the NBA uh at this point uh has run out of ideas in the slam dunk contest once we started jumping over

cars and everything else uh maybe about multiple I missed Dominique first Jordan kind of head to head

yeah I mean you only can you can only come up with so many dunks right it's all sort of uh been done before from the

free throw line behind the back between the legs you know over a guy standing uh

in front of the rim like I don't know what else uh what else you could do so

well if and if you're listening on audio this is when John and I play this is how we play

laughs these are our one-on-one matchups yeah

uh yeah no I've never been confused with a basketball uh player uh before

baseball football uh maybe but uh you know in the NBA I'm you know full

disclaimer right full disclosures I always say I'm not a huge NBA guy I know

who's on the teams I mean I'm I'm with it enough to comment on on where I put

some money right but uh you know uh one thing I don't like about the NBA is just

it's a it's the players kind of rule the rules can get coaches fired all these

super teams like you never see I'm an old school NBA guy I like the NBA when

players wanted to to you know kill each other to voice their trophy there was no

you know no one was working out in the office it's the same thing in the NFL

I know but at least that's physical to begin with right so that means you've still got to be physical right but uh

you know in the NBA now I like when they play defense in the NBA which they only do now in the last two minutes of the

fourth quarter um it's a three-point uh competition a lot of times and so I'm an old school

I'm the old man on the porch when it comes to the NBA I I liked the error I

grew up with right uh you know Bird magic then Jordan came along I was you

know young enough uh old enough to remember Dr J uh you know on the on the

later part of his career uh then Bird magic Kareem uh you know sort of the mid

to late parties career Jordan and then and then uh on up so I'm that's that's

the Heyday for me um I watched a lot more then uh than I do now but I mean the athletes are bad I

think they're they're in better shape right I I watch the I like to say when someone says when did you watch the most

NBA I said when players didn't take days off for load management right when a

kid's coming to see their favorite player didn't have to worry if they weren't going to suit up uh that that

day right not totally dissimilar from Innings management yeah

yeah I don't know I I like ROM gets hurt again in his first day of spring

training or whatever but you're probably right yeah I I just I'm stubborn I'm stubborn

that's my that's my realm that I I lived it through and I missed those days

they're not coming back but you know that's that's when I was the biggest basketball fan uh you know in my life so

well I think both of us uh both actually kind of dig some vintage basketball

cards maybe uh we'll we'll do a segment our favorite vintage basketball card uh

and uh yeah I I like where they're going uh and like you know like that's my
