I usually do a National previews show. I didn't really do that this year. I actually didn't do a ton of National content at the time of this release. If you're listening to the show and release day, I am back from the National, assuming all goes well, it is the day after, but I'm recording this obviously prior to the show, and just wanted to kind of share how I sort of prepare, but more what I'm sort of looking to acquire at the National.
And I don't go just for cards, right, it's all the other events, so main state performances. I'm taking in a White Sox game, never been the rate field, PSA registry, party, hobby, hotline, dinner is just every day is jam pack full of the show itself and then even after the show besides. But I always try to share kind of what are on my target list, and I always try to go into the National with like a five card target list. Now there's thousands of cards I'd love to own, you know, my PC or Hall of Fame graded rookie cards from the four sports and even even non sports, so you know, I like go in with five to eight cards on a target list, knowing full well not going to get all of them not even close.
Generally go in with a list of five, hoping to get two. Three would be I did very well. Somehow two is the target and one, you know, it was better than none, right, but like to get at least two. And so the cards kind of on my list, and I guess these would be so or I shouldn't say cards because they're not all cards, but the items on my list for this year's national and kind of in order, right, I'm looking for the Jimmy Fox nineteen ninety three of ninety three nineteen thirty three gouty.
You know, I consider that his rookie. I know there's the exhibits card, there's a US CARAMELNT, there's even another one. But to me, that's the first distributed appearance of Jimmy on a card, and so I'm looking for that one. I think he's one of the most over underrated players in baseball history and in hobby circles.
So that's up there. I almost bought the next item that I'm going to talk about last year, almost pulled the trigger. I don't have it. I don't necessarily need it, per se, Right, do we need a lot of stuff we acquired not not all the time, right so, but it's a Jackie Robinson auto, whether that be a cut An index card.
You know, obviously I have a budget, so I can't break the bank, but I'd love to acquire a Jackie Robinson auto for the PC as well some other things. Now I think after this stinke there in no real particular order, can go any which way. You know, I want to get the each row pool host Tops traded, whether it be the regular version or the Chrome update. I'd like to get one of those as well.
Economer David young Gun is on my It's been on my list a while. You know, it's not cheap and probably would be more expensive. Have they won the Cup, maybe it's come down and more fordable. I haven't even really got into my like copying it ahead of time stage yet, but that that doesn't take long.
And you know I always go into with an open mind, right Like, obviously as a dealer, I sell too, so if I can, if I see something maybe that's not even for PC, but it's just too good of a deal to pass up to turn around and resell it. I always look for those deals, and you know I'll be at the Singles Club picking out some stuff if they're some some famous hobbyists, doesn't take all the good stuff. I'm just kidding, but that that place is happening. So but I always find something.
I always find something there. But you know, I gotta be careful too, because not driving and flying in. You know, I only have so much that I can you know, carry on the plane. So you know, I have to be diligent with what I purchase.
You know, you always wind up getting some free swag and shirts and and different things like that. So you know, and again my list is, you know, it is even more than I much. I always look for things that catch my eye. I go in there with That's why I really only go in with a list of really sort of five and then leave it sort of open ended.
So you know, I just wrote an article and I know I've shared it even on this program before. Ways, I save for the show. You know, I don't have an unlimited budget, right, Yes, the contact creation makes some money. Yes, as a dealer, I make some money, and the summ of that goes to my show expenses.
Right, But you know, any any national venue that I don't fly to or I don't drive to, is gonna cost me more money because now we're talking about a flight rather than driving, hotel, which that's no matter where you go, rental car and that sort of thing. So Chicago, while it's a great venue center located at I get why people love it. For me, it costs me in my wallet a little bit more. So I try to save up over the course of the from between nationals, right over the course of the year.
So you know, I got play money from my regular pay, my regular job, so I've I'll sock some of that away. When I do a shown, I have a really good show, I'll sock some of that money away. I have a dollar envelope every day. At the end of the day, any ones in my pocket, I collect them all, keep them all tournament at the end of the year.
Believe it or not. That can range anywhere from a couple hundred bucks all the way up to fifteen sixteen hundred dollars. I think this year it was four or five hundred bucks in my dollar envelope. My record was sixteen hundred.
My lowest was two hundred. And you don't even notice it when you just take out a couple ones each day and just put it away and forget about it. So little things like that, you know, other things, some dividends from stocks. I put that in like a sweep of count and just little bits here and there, and they add up.
They add up. You know, I have a great show or good show, I'll put some money away from each show, as I'm putting my sales tax money away too, and it's you know, it's a good I love the National Right, I almost didn't go. My wife kind of talked me off the ledge as I talked about on previous content. You know, she basically said, hey, John, you if you don't go, you're gonna be probably a little bit grumpy and fear uh having some foamo.
And she's not wrong, So she sort of talked me off the ledge. And uh, you know, I when I when I travel, I try to always use like bundling like Expedia, Travelocity orbits hotels dot com. I try to use those things to kind of put hotels, rental car and flights together. And I was actually, even though I kind of did it later than I normally did or normally do, I actually got a pretty good deal for hotel rental car and likes the Chicago I'm leaving well, the show's over.
But if everything goes again, well, I'm getting there Wednesday, and I'll be returning Sunday night, and I'll be tired at work Monday when you might be actually be listening to the show. I might be taking a power nap, if you will. But I go right back to work at summer school. For me, the only thing I take advantage of is I'll can some episodes of sports cardination in this episode kind of so I'm not buried with content that I have to catch up on when I get back.
So, you know, so there's there's the thing Fox Rookie Jack. Oh another card. So now on my list, you know, we talk about nonsports. It's a Mickey Mouse Walt Disney Rookie card from the Tobacco.
I forgot what brand it is, uh, off the top of my head, but a lot of people are familiar with it. It's Walt Disney and Mickey together. I think he's painting them that cards on my short list as well. Not cheap, and it's actually kind of gone up as of late.
So again, you know, I don't go in there like I got to get three cards, four cards, five cards. I kind of go in when a list of five to eight with the target being at least two, and if I can hit that, I usually do. It's a successful show. Remember as important as the cards are.
And that's the common bond we all share, right, it's seeing old friends, new friends, events, dinners. Right, it's the whole you know, the whole kit and kaboodle, right, get togethers and all that and parties, and you know, the five days goes quick and then we start counting down to the next national and the next two will also be in Chicago as well. So if I'm gonna go, I'm gonna get an earlier start on making arrangements rather than what I did for this year. So with that being said, we'll see you next time.
