Boys in that Arena we're not just going to talk about the penny sleer but we're
going to talk about how he launched his company with his wife and we're going to talk about the hobby as well he's a
collector um himself and I think there's something to be said about being a
collector who designs supplies rather than just being even an entrepreneur
who's not in the hobby just looking to start a business right I think there's a difference there we're going to talk
about that and and much more so uh really happy to have Isaac uh on the
show today and uh learn about a little more about him a little bit more about
his company so a quick break and we'll be back with Isaac Alpert hi I'm Isaac

Mr Isaac Alpert uh CEO along with wife I I want to make sure I get proper credit
I and I'm sure he'll do the same of the penny.com full full transparency they
are a sponsor of this show one of them and but it's like I always tell you
folks is I don't have sponsors that I don't believe or use the products and
I've used said products and they are very good and they are definitely more affordable than maybe some of the the
bigger name uh Brands out there but just uh do the same or or better so there's
my little disclaimer but uh without further Ado Isaac welcome to the show well thanks John I really appreciate
taking the time to talk to you no yeah no problem let's start off with we're gonna we're definitely going to Deep
dive you know what you do what you you know the the the company you created uh and the importance of it um but
obviously you're in the hobby uh to begin with kind of you know every time
somebody's first appearance on the show it's kind of the these the start off question is like how did the hobby begin
for you yeah it's uh you know my my story in a lot of ways is probably very
similar to what a lot of people have said you know when I was a kid I I used to take my paper root money and um go to
the uh this was back when cards were sold at candy stores and the uh the local uh convenience store and I you
know started collecting that way um first set I remember Was 1980 tops and
then uh you know into the uh the Bountiful years with Fleer and donus and uh you know I started collecting as a
kid like just about everybody else and uh not particularly discriminating back then you know uh collecting sets trying
to put together the set every year trading with my friends and um that was the start of it and then like a lot of
people uh when I entered my teen years um you know started to feel a little self-conscious about my collecting and
um you know my income started going more towards uh social life and dating and
less towards collecting and I sort of put it aside and uh it was a little bit of a shameful secret you know I I tried
to keep up with what was going on in cards but you know it was more um more like picking up a pack of cards now now
and then and just to see what they were and then went away from it into adulthood and then um in about 2014 or
2015 I got interested again um I downloaded the Topps bunt app and uh was
playing around with this at the time was living overseas and didn't have easy access to to shopping for cards and uh
so bunt kind of got me back into collecting again around 2015 and then started dabbling a little bit more in
physical carts and uh that's where we are today has your you know kind of
coming back you know you mentioned the bun app kind of lit that fire again you know did did some of the changes in the
hobby kind of either catch you off guard guard or or surprise you like talk talk
a little bit about like the return and did your did your in did your interest
remain true or did you kind of like change what how you collected uh it
absolutely it's changed I mean it it it was again it was s kind of a a caveman kind of uh realization you know going
from you know my series collecting back when I was a kid when you know there were no autographs no no memorabilia
cards no chase cards no numbered cards and then kind of Leaping into this era
where you know everything was very different um it took a lot of getting used to uh when I started collecting
again uh it was very non-discriminant I mean I I'm now primarily a team
collector I'll talk more a little bit about it if you're interested but I'm a Padre's fan and um I collect primarily
Padres cards some would say that I hoard Padres cards I'm uh actually spent a little time last evening going through
them and I'm kind of amazed at how the pile has grown but uh I'm also you know
I'm I'm a bit of collectic I I'm a Trailblazers fan in basketball and a Packers fan in in football and so when I
got back into collecting I didn't have any idea you know cards were cards and so I I would buy into an occasional
break to try to get some Trailblazers or some Padres and sometimes I didn't even really know what the sets were I mean it
having such a variety you know it's it's a blessing and a curse but it there was definitely a learning curve and I've
always been interested in learning as much about the hobby as I could back when I was a kid used to read tough
stuff and baseball cards magazine and SD and then you know flashing forward to
2015 I started discovering blowout forums and uh net 54 and so it was
always a a lot of learning involved but you know when I first started buying cards again I had no idea what I was
getting into you mentioned those three teams with with the Packers the Trailblazers in the Padre's were was it
a player for each team that kind that made you grab a t take to the team obviously they're in different locations
it's not know it's not like you're a Rangers Mets you know and a Nick fan
that sort of thing were were there individual players that sort of led to like hey I'm just going to collect this
team as well as player not necessarily uh not not so much I mean sort of the
the the player following came later uh for for each team there's a little bit of a story involved um
sure um I mean go ahead I I'm I'm a bit
long-winded but I love telling this story the Padre in particular um I grew up outside of Boston and so you know my
earliest memories you know my father my grandfather were Red Sox and Celtics and Bruins and Patriots fans and so you know
naturally you gravitate towards the local teams um when I was I probably
would have been about 1980 um there was a remake of the movie The Kid From left field with Gary Coleman and uh the team
in which uh I don't know if anyone is even familiar with the original or the Remake but the premise is that a child
becomes the manager of a Major League team in this case it was Gary Coleman and the team that he was managing was
the Padres and this was back in the Glorious era of the uh the brown and yellow and uh just incredibly garish and
I just happen to love the way the announcer said San Diego Padres and you know but this was of course you know I I
know some of your your listeners are probably quite young and don't remember a pre-internet era but this was back in
the era of box scores and newspapers in one game a week on television and so it
wasn't that strange that I really didn't know who the Padres were and I just happen to like the name and the colors
and uh from that point forward that was my team and uh so it's it's a pretty
strange way of developing an allegiance but that's how it happened for me uh the color scheme and the sound of the name
was enticing enough to to cap me and now you know 40 some odd years later lot of
downs a few ups but I'm a a loyal Padres yeah I love those stories right and for
a lot I'm sure a lot of people listening to you Isaac and and can relate to that
sometimes it's a team Coler can be a commercial I mean for me I'm a New York City kid and I'm a Steelers fan you know
since 1977 with the the Mean Joe Green coke commercial and that kid yes
yeah and and that kid had a resemblance to me at that time we're really the the same age uh at that time and obviously
today he's still around he's not in show business anymore but uh he's known for
that uh commercial we're the same age and between the resemblance of me and the the the kid actor in the in the show
same thing I like those Steeler Jersey colors the black and the gold in the commercial was the White and the gold
and you know I'm not going to lie it didn't hurt that they were winning uh at that time they were in the midst of
their their kind of Super Bowl runs and and that's what did it for me and I took
a lot of heat from my New York City friends like how do you how do you like the Steelers Newman you know they're
they're in Pittsburgh we're you gotta like the Jets or the or the Giants and I'm like I don't like the Jets or the
Giants I didn't have an interest to those team and I never wavered I took I took my share of some local abuse uh you
know in New York but uh and like you said a lot you know sure there was a few
Super Bowls in there in the early part of my fandom and then the 80s were very very thin being a Steeler fan and I
never I never got you know no one can say oh you you jumped off the bandwagon
you know when they were struggling I'm still here you know like you said 40 something years uh later and uh you know
still so it's those stories that I think we all have for the most part you're either like a fan because you're in that
local or there's a story uh like that that that why you're not and and I love
I love those stories you you were a Padre's fan pre Tony Gwyn and then obviously he came along one of the
greatest hitters uh baseball has ever seen and you know that you know I love
those stories too because I thought you might have said well you know I was a big Tony Gwyn and I'm I'm I almost and I
was of course yeah but like you were a Padres fan you know first they just
happened to be on the Padres so I always love I always love those kind of connections and kind of how it all how
it all started and uh I mean is is how about you have time for like the Packers
and Trailblazers is there similar kind of similar stores there yeah I mean not
not quite as interesting I don't think but uh with the the with um the Packers
I think I was I was actually talking with my my family over Thanksgiving I might have actually manufactured this
whole story um but my recollection was that um my mother had uh bought me a
shirt I think at Marshalls or TJ Maxx probably about the same time as the Padres and it happened to be a Lind
Dicky Jersey and I you know I I may have filled in some of the details around it
uh as I've gone along my recollection was that uh she thought that the yellow would um sort of match my Padres and
that's why she chose it uh but you know it was it was probably just one of those $8 jerseys in the discount rack but you
know it fit and all of a sudden that became my team and uh you know playing in the yard I was Lind dicki and that
that was how my H Packer my Packers fandom hey you know it's funny even you know hearing you talk about that I
remember pictures I probably still have them in my my like Photo box of when I was a kid and there's one photo I
remember I was wearing an eagles sweatshirt I wasn't an eagles face pH I'm in New York city so I have no idea I
have no idea where the sweatshirt came from it didn't change my phandom I mean I just wore it you know or I was told to
wear it maybe even like hey get ready for and it happen to have a picture and someone seen it you know one of my
family members who knows I'm a I'm a huge Steeler fan and they're like are you sure you're a Steeler fan look look
at this photo I think it was my son and I'm like Jordan I'm like I don't know the backstory there I'm I you know
there's you know obviously there's a photo with me in an ego sweatshirt but I was a Steelers wore the sweatshirt I
don't know if it was a hand me down I don't know if it was a tri I I don't even know anything where it came from
did my grandma get it you know as a present you know did she think I you know I said Eagles and I got that I
don't know all the the tentacles to it but I've been a Ste fan since 1977 but
it's it's funny how you know know whether it be colors or uh something
given to you can you know sway uh your your your Phantom and just to to kind of
close it out too Isaac with with the Trailblazers how did uh how did one become a Trailblazers especially at
Boston with the Celtic well you know and and again I I still have sort of uh
vestigal feelings for all of the local teams but uh the Trailblazers it's not quite so interesting I I actually I was
living in Port and I I sort of I was there for about a year and I I adopted the team this would have been U the late
90s and uh you know they they were a good team but again I you know I like the colors as much as anything there
there's always there seems to be an aesthetic element I have a perhaps uh questionable aesthetic taste but there
there definitely has to be a an appealing Jersey behind the uh the fandom as well but not not quite as
interesting as a Gary Coleman movie but um that that's that's how that came about no that's it's funny I read a book
years back I don't even you know not on purpose but I don't remember the author but it was about fandom and it was a you
know kind of he wrote rules rules to fandom and one of his rules is you know
you can change your team like your favorite team anytime be to anything you want before the age or 14 and then after
the age of 14 you you have to lock in to a team and then the exceptions are is if
you move to the a different city you can then change your allegiance to the local team and it's funny hearing you say like
hey I lived in Portland that it reminded me of that book and that rule that that arthor you know uh instilled that hey
you you know at 14 you're locked in but if you move whether it be for work or you move with family uh you can pledge
allegiance to the the new city that you're you know the local uh you're in
so you know according to that this book I think it was something called like the
rules of fandom or something like that and I I read it's not a big book and uh just kind of goes over how people pick
teams and then he he took it upon himself like hey we don't really have a rule book so I I'm created one with book
that was one of one of those rules so hearing you say hey I live in Portland it reminded me of that book and that
rule yeah it's I find it very interesting I mean I I've sort of done this as a thought experiment and it's
sort of hard to to imagine what would you know what what would be the Breaking Point with with my fandom and and it's
sort of it's it's like trying try to change your birth date you know you you can lie to yourself about doing it but
deep down inside you know you know like right now I mean I don't want to get too much into it but I'm not a huge fan of
the the Trailblazers coaching staff and I would be much happier with just about
anybody in charge of that team and I've watched I've been watching fewer games games you know I I still follow the team
but you know it's still my team and you know my my allegiance is deeper than the
individual who's coaching or or the players and you know I just sort of Wonder to myself what what could a team
have to do to to uh make me break that Bond and they haven't reached that point
yet so it's interesting to to talk about fandom yeah I mean you know I I'll just
kind of close the segment you know the question now with this to we saw what just happened in in Oakland where played
their last game uh there and that stadium was was packed and you know I watched it on TV obviously I wasn't
there but you know people very emotional and then tears flowing and you know uh
they did some interviews I heard some and some people are like hey wherever the team moves whether it be Sacramento
Las Vegas I'm an ace fan and I can't change that it's sort of it's in my blood and then other people are like hey
I'm an Oakland fan and if they're not in Oakland I can pick a you know I'm going to have to pick a new Allegiance but you
know they were up mad at the ownership and the leadership of the club and so
they weren't going to follow you know they were and and I I get it they're mad that the the team is basically being
yanked from their city and they're like I can't I'm not going to support that you know unless they they came back to
Oakland they're not the Oakland A so and so you have both sides of that coin and
they're both fans right they're both were Oakland A fans uh some are going to
stay loyal and some are like no you do this to me you don't get my allegiance
so it's it's it's the same situation but there's two dichotomies there of you
know what direction a fan uh will go and I found that when you said you know what
does it take to like where I'm not a fan anymore and there's a there's a situation you know which doesn't happen
uh that often uh but where a team gets pulled out of a city um and and relocated so yeah yeah it
always feels I I I I feel from a distance the the pain of those uh those
fan bases time for a quick break but we'll be right

covered love B sports card nation has
returned I think this is true for all of us and again I'm sorry to to belabor the point here but like sort of like time
time begins around the time when you're 9 or 10 and so you know the the Expos belong in Montreal because they were
there and and I'm sure that there are people older than me that say you know the the A's were from Kansas City and
then there's you know their their great-grandparents telling them no Philadelphia Philadelphia but you know you sort of there's that childhood uh
concept of of what sports should look like you know any deviation from that is is sort of it still feels abnormal now
you know Washington doesn't have a baseball team they're the Expos it's just a temporary setback that's now
lasted two decades or whatever it's been y yeah no no doubt and uh you know I I I
read that book and I sort of many of the rules that were in the book I actually
uh I chuggle at because I kind of you know I agreed with him for the most part maybe not across the but that's the
beauty right as fandom we can we can make our own rules there is no there is no official rule maybe the book you know
the author thinks he has it but we can change you know we can do uh what our heart tells us to do absolutely yeah
speaking of heart telling us what to do it's a good segue um you know you launched the penny.com uh find supplies
for the hobby now we have obviously other Supply uh companies we don't have to mention names but what what what was
it that caused the light bulb to go off and you know you created uh this company
um you know what led to that I guess is short I I I don't I wouldn't say that there was a single light bulb moment there
were probably a number of things that all kind of led to the penny severer um
before the penny severer I was a teacher for many years I lived overseas I think
I mentioned um I was uh living in Asia for about 20 years teaching in uh Korea
and Hong Kong mostly high school and uh you know I was very happy I L teaching I
I enjoyed it enormously um but um probably around covid time you
know things started started to change a little bit and I think like a lot of people I you know I had the opportunity
to kind of evaluate where my life was and where it was going and um there was
if there were a single moment uh you know it didn't lead directly to the penny severer but um there was um a
particular card I can't even remember the exact card now but it was kind of an odd um probably a probably about
basketball patch card um might have been a 180 or 260 and living in Hong Kong you
know I didn't and just particularly during covid didn't have easy access to supplies uh did what a lot of people do
looked on eBay looked on Amazon and I was shocked to find out that it was about $6 or whatever it was for this
odd-sized magnetic and I kind of asked myself why you know a 35p point magnetic
you know you can pick it up for a couple of bucks there isn't that much more plastic in it the magnet's not that much
more powerful why is this you know six or seven dollars this really seems like you know not you know it seemed like
price gouging to be honest um you know obviously in the whole scheme of the universe the the price of hobby supplies
isn't you know the most important thing but you know why are why are hobbyists getting cheated why are they spending so
much money on what's essentially the same thing as as a real common object and and I'd like to say that that light
bulb struck in that moment I gave up teaching and devoted my life to finding ways to to uh bring uh reasonably priced
hobby supplies to the world but you know it didn't you know like a lot of things it happened but it kind of stuck in my
head and that was sort of the Genesis for it you know this question why does this Supply why do the odd supplies that
you know the larger sizes the less commonly used supplies why are these so much more expensive and um then as time
passed and U my wife and I started more seriously discussing coming to the US and and um you know I started thinking
about what I wanted to do and you know what we wanted to do as a family and uh I really wanted to do something you know
that we controlled I wanted to start some sort of business and it just sort of seemed like a natural I mean I've you
know I went away from collecting but you know my sports fandom was always there and I've always enjoyed collecting and
um you know it just looked like an area that you know there there may be room for somebody to step in and sort of fill
this little niche that uh that we identified and so all of these things combined sort of to um kind of plant the
idea and then you know being in Hong Kong we had uh access to a number of the
factories right across the bay and so we were able to get samples you know a few years before we even started and you
know we started looking more deeply into the you know the the collectible um supply side of the business and um you
know we the more we talked about it the more we said you know if we're going to do it let's just go ahead and do it and um and then you know Flash Forward to um
to May and uh we got up and running how how D you know it's launching any sort
of business I don't care what industry you're in um it's it's always daunting
right you know it may be a little nervous and and you know scary sometimes depending on on what's involved you know
knowing like I know you're overseas too um but like knowing that the that this
was an arena that already had some big uh combatants in it like you know how
how much did that weigh on on to do or was it a price point like hey I can make
products better or just as good and at a lower price point how did in your mind
how was that how did that all you know lay out for um you know I think it was
equal parts not knowing exactly what we were getting into and um not being afraid to take the chance um I think we
looked at it as a calculated gamble yeah obviously there are a lot of established Brands um but we thought that uh we
could do it better um we pride ourselves on service you know a lot of people say
this but it's it's just my wife and I and uh you know the the the blessing in
the curse of being small is that we we have that ability that you know we we take care of things um and uh you know
part of it I think was just that the uh the uh Bliss of not really knowing what we were getting into we decided once we
committed to doing it we committed to doing it and um I don't have a very strong business background and so that
probably you know the things I didn't know didn't scare me and so uh you know
you spend a lot of people spend a lot of their lives being afraid to take chances and you know and I'm not going to lie I
was one of them but we decided that this would be a great opportunity and I've been very fortunate in my life I had a
wonderful career um I have a a very supportive wife who said that if you think that we can make this work let's
go ahead and do it and um I can honestly say that I don't regret it one bit I
think it you know I think that what we're doing it's exciting every day is a new challenge um but I love it I love
waking up in the morning and and knowing that um you know we're we're playing you know a small part in uh making people's
collecting lives a little bit better yeah no doubt and again I I've used the I've used your supplies um no complaints
in in in R reviews right it does what it's supposed to do right protect our
our cherished Collectibles and and you know when you when you launched did did
everything go pretty smooth or were there hiccups along the way you know
every day has been a hiccup it's I I'm sorry I I I I laugh when you say that
yeah it's I mean of course there have been a lot of hiccups but that's what makes it exciting I mean
um one of the great things about teaching is that no two days were ever alike and that no day ever went exactly
as you planned and uh you know when I was teaching were there days that I went home fuming and swearing and saying I'm
never doing this again and I'm never going back of course uh any any teacher who says otherwise is lying uh if you if
you care then you're taking chances when you take chances things go wrong uh the same thing is is has been true since we
got started I mean um we we sort of um foolishly thought that you know getting
up and running was going to be the hard part and uh we learned on day two that
that is not the case you know we we set up a website and there it was and then you know we sat around and waited and um
it was a pretty exciting moment you know we were again very fortunate I think it was uh day one about six hours after we
launched that we had a customer and uh you know obviously we believed that we were going to succeed but even even with
that belief having that first customer it was sort of a revelation like somebody that we don't know is willing to take a chance with us and uh we've
been very grateful um you know ever since that we've gotten such great support from from uh The Collector
Community but but yeah I mean it's been hiccup after hiccup uh it's a you know
you learn as you go and and that's like I I keep coming back to the same thing but that's what makes it fun you know
sort of like you know the thrill of opening a pack of cards is you don't know what's inside you know the the thrill of waking up in the morning is
you just don't know what the business is going to throw at you and that's how it's been so far one of the reasons I
asked that Isaac is not to to make you feel bad or or bring up you know
something that's you know maybe not the best part of of of owning your own business but you know everyone who
doesn't do it right thinks it's easy and and it's not what whether it's running
launching a podcast or launching a a Supply Company right it but it's that
perseverance and dedication right that that gets you to where you need to be and where you want to go so that's why I
asked and and you know just to like you know there's going to be bumps in the road right no matter what what field or
or what you're you just got to work through it um you know the I know it's cliche but whatever doesn't kill you
makes you stronger uh type of thing and like you said absolutely yeah go ahead
no no I I mean I I'm just I I completely agree with that because if you don't encounter you know conflict then you're
you're probably not not trying hard enough you know whether it's you know collecting cards or or running a podcast
or running a business you know if you're not taking enough chances if you're not challenging yourself every day then you
know you're probably not doing it right and uh you know what's the fun in that yeah no no doubt when you first launched
it like you said six hour six hours in you had your first sale that obviously was encouraging um you know when you go
to any business right you look if you walk into an established business you look on the back wall they usually have
like their first dollar that uh was spent you know on the wall for you it
was six hours in um you know talk about like when you first launched what what
products did you offer then and kind of a comparison now you know that you you're you're even more established how
in other words the trajectory of of the PES uh well when we began we decided
that we were going to start with you know sort of the your your vanilla supplies you know the the most basic
supplies your your top loaders from 35 Point up to 360 same with the magnetics
um thick card sleeves regular card sleeves uh Team bags you know the
basically the if you were going to start um a collection the the the range of
supplies that you would need and uh right now now we're in the course of
expanding our line in fact um we just have H our next um shipment on the way
and we're going to be expanding into a little bit more variety um things like the the uh top loaders with colored
borders uh different different styles of sleeves um more for the graded Card
Collector um you know we're trying to find things that where we can reach you no matter how you collect and um you
know going forward we have a lot of plans to go uh more deeply into um catering to Vintage collectors because
we feel that they are underserved uh that's a little bit further down the road um one of the little hiccups that
that we were discussing but it's still in the works uh we should have it by um hopefully I I I I I hesitate to to give
a date because I've been giving dates and they're always wrong let's just say sometime um early to mid next year 2025
we'll have those and uh also uh rather excitingly um we're learning quite a bit
about uh tcgs and um we're looking to kind of grow that area of the business
as well so you know we started with just the you know the the very Basics and um
one of the things about being small is that we have no choice but to listen to what people want and you know one of the
the real nice things about doing card shows which is something that we started early on is that we can talk to people
directly you know there's no hiding behind a website and we've got gotten a lot of feedback and um we try to
accommodate what people tell us that they want because ultimately we're here to serve collectors yeah and I love
hearing you say that right you're like you said you're not hire you're not hiding behind you know a screen and and
you're out there talking with people you're a collector yourself right what better you know I always you know we've
seen other companies and I'm not even talking just supplies but I'm just talking Hobby companies in general that
went out outside the Hobby and hired like a CEO or someone in charge of pushing a lot of the buttons and in most
of those cases Isaac it really kind of blew up in their face and was not a
really positive outcome I I think it's important if you're run you know if
you're running a hobby company that you're familiar with the terrain and Landscape such as you are as a as a
collector uh yourself because you know like hey I I want this chances are other
people want this too or you know or I don't like what this product does we can
do it better because you're already using some of the the existing stuff does does being part of the Hobby and I
I mean I'm sort of answering this question for you but I'll let you speak to it like being a hobby member I think
that gives you an advantage too because you know what people want because you yourself might want to see it if it
doesn't if it's not in existence yet yeah absolutely uh it it does cut both
ways though I mean the hardest thing is sort of putting your own ego aside like um when we were in the in the planning
stages obviously I was able to to um call on my own hobby knowledge in terms
of you know what what do we need but you know the other side of the coin is that not everybody collects the same way that
I do not everybody's interested in the same things that I am and it's it's very important for me to kind of you know hit
pause on my own collector perspective and and just be open-minded to other people's and you know that's really been
important for us so far um it's very humbling uh when we do I keep coming back to the card show thing but it's
quite humbling because I I find it I won't say frustrating but you know a little bit repetitive how often I say no
because a lot of people come to us because they're not able to find the things that they're looking for and it's
really frustrating for me to be a to to have to say I'm sorry we don't have that yet you know sign up for the mailing
list and you know hopefully we'll have that for you in the future and you know it's but it's also very inspiring how
many people are willing to take that chance because you know I am asking the questions and I am listening and you
know I I do try to to accommodate that but but yeah not everybody collects the same way I do not everybody uses the
same supplies that I do want to thank Isaac Albert for joining the show also
one of our great sponsors right the pen.com go to the show notes get your
discount code and go over there great supplies low prices 10% off with that
discount code and uh it was fun chopping up some hobby with Isaac we're not done we'll be back more with more uh next
Friday on the second half of our conversation so uh we'll have Isaac back
uh next week but uh you know it runs a great business along with his wife and
uh uses semi rigids topl loaders uh Penny sleeves obviously they have other
uh plenty of other supplies as well and why pay more for the same or better
quality uh there's no reason to all right let's hear from our hobby as the people announcer of the week some
